Under the supervision of the Store Coordinator, the Retail Sales Associate will sell product, provide store customer service as well as provide answers to customers regarding the Village. This role will contribute to Old Sturbridge Village’s commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility.

Old Sturbridge Village, the largest outdoor history museum in the Northeast, depicts a rural New England town of the 1830s. Step inside more than 40 original buildings, and explore homes, meetinghouses, a district school, country store, bank, working farm, three water-powered mills, and trade shops – all situated on more than 200 scenic acres. Talk with authentically costumed historians and see heritage breed farm animals. Discover the endless ways to immerse yourself in the Village. Old Sturbridge Village, a museum and learning resource of New England life, invites each visitor to find meaning, pleasure, relevance, and inspiration through the exploration of history.

Hours will vary with a potential of 1 to 3 days per week.

MUST be able to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Provide the best experience for all customers
  • Provide product information, assist in customer selections, and offer visit-related information to all customers and prospective customers both in-person and on the phone in a friendly manner.
  • Accurately ring sales in POS system and maintain security procedures to reduce inventory shortage.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with diverse groups.
  • Ensure the safety and cleanliness of the work area, following COVID-19 guidelines that are set in place. Share responsibility with all staff for the clean and neat appearance of the entire Village
  • Maintain proper accounts of currency in the cash drawer
  • Follow established procedures in the handling of cash, negotiables, and related records to safeguard OSV’s finances and ensure against loss
  • Alert the Store Coordinator quickly, effectively and appropriately to individual cases of unfavorable customer service or special needs and respond if necessary within clearly established guidelines
  • Demonstrated commitment to valuing diversity and contributing to an inclusive working and learning environment.
  • Available to work evening programs in the summer and fall as needed
  • Understand and observe all Village policies
  • Perform other duties as assigned
  • Effective communication to other village employees, management, Board Members and Trustees

Requirements:

  • Demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively with a wide variety of audiences
  • Minimum 3 months customer services or retail sales experience preferred
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Strong interpersonal, phone skills and ability to sell merchandise
  • Ability and willingness to learn – and stay updated – on Old Sturbridge Village exhibits, operations, projects and programs as well as store merchandise assortment. Ask questions of staff and supervisors and observe on-grounds activities.
  • Ability to maintain a calm exterior presence during periods of high volume, high stress or unusual events
  • Promotes diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility.
  • Ability to comprehend and follow directions, and work in a team environment
  • Basic math and computer skills are required. Demonstrated experience with computers and POS systems is desired
  • Demonstrate the ability to multi-task and work in a high paced environment with a professional attitude
  • Must be reliable, punctual, and accountable
  • Ability to stand for 5 hours and lift 40+ lbs.
  • Must have excellent customer service skills, be courteous, efficient and possess a positive attitude
